ARCA 113 Ecological
Association for Environmental Research and Conservation
Our story
The origins
In November 1982 the environmentalist movement called “Circolo Naturalisti Salentino” was born spontaneously, with headquarters at the Civic Museum of Natural History of Salento in Calimera (LE). From this initial circle the National Association ARCA (Association for Environmental Research and Conservation) 113 Ecological was born institutionally on 10 November 1990 with a notarial deed registered by the Notary Alfredo Cillo Studio of Lecce. In January 1983 the Circolo Naturalisti Salentino began to support and assist the ordinary management activities of the newly established Civic Museum of Natural History of Salento, thanks to several retired teachers and young volunteers.
The first initiatives
On April 17, 1983, there was its first successful initiative, the “ Clean Salento ” operation, the removal of a huge amount of waste in the newly established Cesine Naturalistic Oasis in Vernole (LE). The Municipality of Vernole had provided around 400 ecological bags; the Forestry Corps made available its own vehicles for transport and storage in points convenient for collection and subsequent disposal. From that moment on, every year there were dozens of interventions by ARCA volunteers in favor of cleaning public and private spaces. From May 1983 there was a crescendo of initiatives and collaborations that initially spread throughout the province of Lecce, in particular in the most neighbouring municipalities: Santa Maria di Leuca, Botrugno, Caprarica, Melendugno, Soleto, Martano, Otranto, Castrignano, Vernole and Calimera, and then gradually throughout all the provinces of Salento. A key role in this first phase was played by the spontaneous availability of many Civil Protection units, in particular Soleto, together with the CFS station commands.
Famous people and volunteers
Let us not forget that among the founders and promoters of this movement we must mention the illustrious figure of the former Provincial Commander of the CFS, Dr. Raffaele Congedo. And so it was that, also through the communications and reports of radio amateurs, we began to operate and support the bodies already responsible for putting out fires, recovering and caring for wild fauna, involving people with disabilities or social problems in the activities, coming from or entrusted to us also by communities in order to start a gradual path of social and work integration. We cannot fail to mention that in November 1982 the Civic Museum of Natural History of Salento was also established in Calimera, which was the starting point of ARCA, as the importance of volunteers in supporting the ordinary and extraordinary management activities of the same civic structure was understood. A special and dutiful memory must be addressed to the then Regional Councillor and Assessor Leonardo Brizio Aprile and to the Mayor of Calimera Vincenzo Fazzi, who strongly believed in and allowed the establishment of both the Civic Museum and the ARCA
Collaborations and twinning
In December 1985 there was a cultural twinning between Calimera (LE) and the city of Pompei (NA) with the inauguration of an exhibition entitled “Ornithology and Environment” in favor of the redevelopment of the Sarno Valley and its river which was seriously polluted at the time. The exhibition was a great success in terms of public attendance but above all of school children of all levels and grades. It was such a success that 2 extensions were necessary.
The activity continued to grow and diversify over the years, thanks to the constant increase in volunteers who soon learned to interact with each other, but the important thing was that between the youngest and oldest pensioners, a familiar relationship of exchange of knowledge and experiences grew. Over time, many university professors from all over Italy approached and became an active force. A significant part were members of the IREDA Institute of Environmental Research and Education. Thanks to its esteemed president Prof. Elio Abatino, ARCA over the years achieved important collaborations as well as twinning. We soon realized that other national associations began to appropriate merits that were certainly not relevant to them, not only that, strong in their recognition, they cloned some of our initiatives also knowing how to transform them into fundable projects. But ARCA continued to grow and organize events and educational and aggregative moments of ever greater local and national resonance.
Lest we forget the people who made ARCA great
From November 1982, when the "Circolo naturalisti salentini" was born to today, many are the people who have dedicated their time and resources to grow and consolidate this association. In order of membership and also of institutional roles held, we remember, listing them, those who have been able to distinguish themselves the most. This does not mean that every active member should not be mentioned, but since we are talking about thousands, it is understandable that this is not feasible.
